There’s nothing finer than a new backdrop to play with (okay…maybe a high-end camera or lens is better…WAY better). Even though I had a sore throat and a pounding headache yesterday, I decided it was time to add to my custom backdrops. Crazy? Yes! Happy with the results? Yes!

I saw a gorgeous portrait a few weeks ago with a beautiful pastel violet background, and I thought it would be a perfect colour for spring and summer shoots. It’s a really beautiful colour with all skin tones and hair colours.

I picked up a large painter’s canvas drop cloth and three quarts of Ralph Lauren flat paint.

I only used two of the colours and it took the whole two quarts of paint. Yikes! Next time I’ll prime the cloth, so it doesn’t soak up sooooo much paint. It would probably make it a lot easier to spread the paint too.

I was worried that the colours were too saturated and bright, but they dried a lot darker and became beautiful, muted colours. I just wish I had steamed out the fold lines before painting, but c’est la vie! I’ll be able to get rid of those lines in Photoshop lickety-split.

Yup. I don’t have any makeup on and I’m looking a little tired-sick-mom-ish. That’s just how I roll sometimes, and I’m completely comfortable with it. Girls get to glam up AND wear pajamas!!!!

I’m really happy with the backdrop, and it will be put to very good use really soon! The next one I do will be blackboard paint. I love the chalky, flat look they give portraits.
